My newest piece of art…

Posted on March 9, 2017

I’m very happy to have finished this piece!  It was one of the harder pieces to print.  Only 5 prints, but the tonality was challenging to get right.  I’ve realized that even when I separate the negs to make individual prints, it doesn’t matter if I print it exactly the same, the tonality always varies from print to print.  Fortunately, I like the effect, it brings a graphic element to my work that I enjoy creating.

Here’s an example of how I cut out the middle to add the middle print.  Was definitely tricky and I can’t get it extremely flat, but I think it’ll do!

And here’s the final piece.  (Shot with an iPhone).  I’ll get it copied soon.  Thank you to again to Rhea Mccarter Craft for makeup, Chancy Cone for hair, Amy Cooper as my awesome assistant, Courtney and Alexis as the gorgeous model twins!, and of course my own twin, Kat Nowlin.

What’s keeping me busy…

Posted on March 6, 2017

This little girl is what’s keeping me busy these days!  Being a parent is amazing!  Definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done.  She was very grumpy this day.  I started photographing her b/c it helps me deal with her temper tantrums, and the “terrible twos”!  What’s super awesome is that Fiona herself calms down when I start photographing her.  I feel like it allows us to just be together.  I’m a photographer mom whose kid likes to be photographed!  How luck am I!?

Completed Revised “Rooted” w/Double Exposure

Posted on February 24, 2017

So happy to have finished this piece today!  Thanks to Hasie and Clara for being the awesome models as always!  And to Rhea Mccarter Craft, owner and operator of Adore Boutique in Austin, TX, the amazing makeup artist, and the fabulous Eden Hinshaw, who I miss doing shoots like this with!!!

I decided to revise this particular image b/c I’m exploring double exposures.  I think it brings a different aesthetic to my work that I was looking for!  Now that I’ve found it I’m continuing this artistic discovery for the rest of the “Twin Element” body of work.  I’m hoping that it will convey a sense of wonder and closeness that I wasn’t getting before.  Hope people will like it as much as I do.  On to the next!

Newest piece, going to print

Posted on February 21, 2017

Excited about this new piece I just created.  Going to get in the darkroom soon!  Think I’ll do platinum on vellum with copper, but I’m also really wanting to learn the albumen process!  That might take some time though.  For now, I’m very happy with this “Our Reflection” piece that I’ll be printing soon.

Thanks again to Rhea Mccarter Craft, owner and operator of Adore Boutique in Austin, TX, the amazing makeup artist.  Chancy Cone, also from Adore Boutique, was the fabulous hair designer.  Amy V. Cooper, owner and operator of Trove Agency was my fantastic assistant.  Thank  you for being wonderful models, Alexis & Courtney!!  “Twin Elements”

Women’s March 2017 in Austin, TX

Posted on January 23, 2017

I had the opportunity to attend the women’s march in Austin, TX 2017.  It was incredible to see that many people coming together for women.  I love my city!  After looking at these images I realize I was a bit distant and it was hard for me to engage. I think it’s b/c I’m not always comfortable being around that many people. But I’m happy I went and happy to have witnessed such togetherness.

I know people were cheering and making lots of noise, but I was interested in how quite a lot of people were.  Almost like everyone had a strong intent to be there for many different reasons.  They walked by slowly and held their signs for everyone to read. These are my “Quiet March” photos.  Hope you enjoy.
